Darken is a quirky little horse who is exceptionally timid, flighty, quick as a cat, and apparently smarter than anyone ever imagined. With forty years of training experience under her belt, his owner, Jan Sharp, fully expects him to be her crowning achievement; instead he sees horse-eating monsters behind every bush, funks out of trick horse school, suffers medical emergencies, and does his best to frustrate her at every turn. All that changes the day Darken walks out of his stall and proves just how smart he really is. As he works to overcome his many challenges, Jan is rewarded by watching him blossom. Along the way, she learns that it's the little steps and victories in life that are to be savored and enjoyed, instead of hurried past in an attempt to reach greater goals. Jan discovers Darken's real value is the inspiration his story is to others who are facing their own challenges. Ride along on the five-year journey Darken takes to find his own path in life, and the amazing way he uses his talents to help others. Climb aboard, hold on tight, and enjoy the ride.
New Kids on the BlockSimon and Schuster. 2012
An authorized biography of supergroup New Kids on the Block—tracking their rise, fall, and recent return as one of the biggest acts of all time (with a special focus on the fans who have supported them every step of the way). Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. They set the bar for every boy band that followed and changed the course of pop music forever. In the 1980s, for millions of young girls around the world, they were gods. But behind the scenes, they were just kids. In this authorized biography of the band, the New Kids tell it all to rock author Nikki Van Noy. “What distinguishes this from similar biographies is Van Noy’s inclusion of the voices of dozens of NKOTB fans both in the story itself—commenting on events from a fan’s perspective—and sharing personal tales of kindnesses shown by the band members at the end of each chapter.” (The Boston Globe)
Love, LizzieAlbert Whitman. 2009
Lizzie's mom is serving in the military overseas, and Lizzie really misses her. While they are apart, Lizzie and her mom write letters to each other to help make the separation easier. Lizzie asks her mom to hurry up and defend freedom so she can come home soon. It's hard when her mom misses Lizzie's soccer championship and her birthday. Throughout the story, Lizzie draws maps to show her mother the important things in her life--like the new ice cream store, her new friend's house, the family's Thanksgiving airplane trip to Florida, and the stars in the sky. While Lizzie doesn't know exactly where her mom is, they both can wish on the same star.
Humanizing Digital RealitySpringer. 2017
This book aims at finding some answers to the questions: What is the influence of humans in controlling CAD and how much is human in control of its surroundings? How far does our reach as humans really go? Do the complex algorithms that we use for city planning nowadays live up to their expectations and do they offer enough quality? How much data do we have and can we control? Are today’s inventions reversing the humanly controlled algorithms into a space where humans are controlled by the algorithms? Are processing power, robots for the digital environment and construction in particular not only there to rediscover what we already knew and know or do they really bring us further into the fields of constructing and architecture? The chapter authors were invited speakers at the 6th Symposium "Design Modelling Symposium: Humanizing Digital Reality", which took place in Ensa-Versailles, France from 16 - 20 September 2017.
The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian MusicRoutledge. 2011
The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 4, Southeast Asia (1998). Largely revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies of the different musical cultures of Southeast Asia and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area. Part one provides an in-depth introduction to the area of Southeast Asia and explores a series of issues and processes, such as colonialism, mass media, spirituality, and war. The articles in this section are important in gaining historical, political, and social perspective. Part two focuses on mainland Southeast Asia, with essays representing Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Burma, Peninsular Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and the minority peoples of mainland Southeast Asia. Part three focuses on island Southeast Asia, dividing the area into three sections: Indonesia, the Philippines, and Borneo. In addition to offering a detailed study of the music of each area, it also offers recent perspectives on the gamelan and theater traditions of Indonesia. Questions for Critical Thinking at the end of each major section guide and focus attention on what issues – musical and cultural – arise when one studies the music of Southeast Asia – issues that might not occur in the study of other musics of the world. An accompanying compact disc offers musical examples from Southeast Asia.
